Importance of Magnetism in Phase Stability, Equations of State, and Elasticity

— The effects of magnetism on high pressure properties of transition metals and transition metal compounds can be quite important. In the case of Fe, magnetism is responsible for stability of the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at ambient conditions, and the large thermal expansivity in face-centered cubic (fcc) iron, and also has large effects on the equation of state and elasticity of hexagon...

Magnetic properties of PrCu2 at high pressure

We report a study of the low-temperature high-pressure phase diagram of the intermetallic compound PrCu2, by means of molecular-field calculations and Cu nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure. The pressure-induced magnetically-ordered phase can be accounted for by considering the influence of the crystal electric field on the 4f electron orbitals of the Pr ions and by i...

Combining state-of-the-art experiment and ab initio calculations for a better understanding of the interplay between valence, magnetism and structure in Eu compounds at high pressure

We describe how first principle calculations can play a key role in the interpretation of X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra for a better understanding of emergent phenomena in condensed matter physics at high applied pressure. Eu compounds are used as case study to illustrate the advantages of this methodology, ranging from studies...

Magnetism in FeO at Megabar Pressures from X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy

We report evidence for a preserved magnetic state in FeO up to 143 GPa at room temperature using high-resolution x-ray emission spectroscopy. This observation is based on the spectral line shape of the Fe Kb emission line. Up to the highest pressure, FeO remains a magnetic insulator. Combining our results with previous Mössbauer data, we present a new magnetic phase diagram of FeO. Features lik...
